Day 87: Austin to Cold Springs Station

This morning, I had a ham and cheese omelette at the Toiyabe Cafe. After I came back to the motel room, I finished packing. Soon after, I started riding west on route 50.

It was downhill in the beginning, then some flat sections, then some inclines. The road had construction cones for about 24 miles. I guess they will be repaving the road. In any case, I was making good speed, about 15 mph.

Riding on a section of newly paved road

Around noon, I spotted Cold Springs Station restaurant on the left side of the road. I decided to grab some lunch. As I was eating my chicken sandwich someone interrupted me and told me my bike has a flat tire. I was curious because it didn’t have a flat when I first arrived at the restaurant.

My third flat of the trip

After my lunch, I took the tube out and found two holes on the rim side of the tube. Maybe the heat caused the tube to break. I was prepared with a replacement. After putting it on and inflating it with my CO2 canisters, I found the break pad was touching a part of the tire after I had put the wheel back on. I adjusted the break pad and everything works fine now.

It was almost 2 PM and I rode about 49 out of the 63 miles to Middlegate. The temperature was 93 degrees. Since the restaurant has a campground for only $10, including a shower, I decided to stay here for the day. I will have to ride 61 miles to Fallon tomorrow.

Had two meals here. Will stay at the campsite behind this restaurant for the night.

I spent some time inside the restaurant watching TV. Soon I got bored, so I pitched my tent on the grassy area behind the restaurant. Then I took a shower.

Back at the restaurant, I had another burger for dinner and filled up my water bottles. I might get something else to eat since I’m still hungry. Not sure what else I’ll be doing afterward.
